New Tea Clones Released

The Tea Research Foundation of Central Africa has released the following four new tea clones for commercial production: 1) 95/4-43 released as PC 401; 2) 84/30-20 as PC 402; 3) 94/3-28 as PC 403; and 4) 94/6-13 as PC 404.

These new clones have very good potential for high yield, better and unique quality, tolerance to Helopeltis, extreme temperature and drought, which is a significant improvement over the existing commercial cultivars. The unique quality attributes will change the current perception of Malawi teas and enhance the industry’s competitiveness. The new clones are climate smart since they are relatively more tolerant to biotic and abiotic stresses. This will ensure sustainable production of tea despite climate change effects, and further minimise use of pesticides, thereby maintaining the good reputation of Malawi teas on the world market.

The release of these new clones is another milestone in TRFCA’s breeding programme. Growers are encouraged to use these elite planting materials.
